U8 – U19 Recreation League

The SVU Recreation programs are offered in the Fall and Spring and provides the opportunity for young players to develop basic soccer skills and teamwork in a stress-free and fun environment.  SVU is a long-time advocate of small-sided games, which promote player development across all age groups. This program is inclusive and is not based on results.
This  program is available for all players born in 2018 – 2006.

Important Information

  • The Recreation program season consists of one (1) practice session during the week and one (1) game on Saturday (7 games guaranteed) over eight (8) weeks each in both the Fall and the Spring.  Practices are held in 4 areas on the city/county. Players have the choice to be on a team in any high school district as it does not need to be the same area of residence. All games are played at Monger Park.

    The Recreation program is coordinated by SVU staff, but relies heavily on volunteers to keep costs down for all. Volunteers are needed to oversee age divisions and prepare schedules, coach (head and assistant), support parent and other game day roles. As you register your child, please consider a role that would be right for you.

    Match Dates: All Saturdays: Sept 14, 21, 28. Oct 5, 12, 19, 26. Nov 2. Make Up Nov. 9.

    Practices are held in 4 areas on the city/county. Players have the choice to be on a any team in any of our regions as it does not need to be the same area of residence.

    PRICES:
    $80 for 2024-25 for U8 Rec and Above
    *This does not include the Jersey fee

    DEADLINE: July 31 2024

    Registration Late Fee: $95 for 2024-25

    Request for a refund and to withdraw from the Recreation program must be made through an e-mail or written notice by September 14, 2024.  Refunds will be issued less a $20.00 processing fee.  Refunds will be sent in the form of a check and will take about 3 weeks to be processed.

    What Your Player Will Need:
    •    All players must wear shin guards for all practices and games
    •    Clothing appropriate for the weather and safety
    •    Water for every game and practice
    •    Safe footwear for playing soccer – (soccer cleats are not required but recommended)
    •    Appropriate size soccer ball
    o    U8 use a size 3 soccer ball
    o    U10 & U12 use a size 4 soccer ball
    o    U15 & older use a size 5 soccer ball

    Monger Park Soccer Complex will be the home of Recreation Match Days for our Spring 2024 season! We are excited to offer an unmatched game day experience for all families, in one location for our whole program. Monger Park Soccer Complex: 6105 S Valley Pike #6051, Mt Crawford, VA 22841

    PRACTICE LOCATIONS:
    To keep costs down, we rely on municipalities to provide fields. If a municipality decides to close their fields, than an alternate location will be identified as close to the planned location as possible.

    AGE GROUPS: All of our recreation divisions are built with groups of players across two age groups. Starting Fall 2024 we will be following US Soccer guidelines to group players by birth years. 

    For Fall 2024:

    U6 Age Groups: Players born in 2019 & 2020

    U8 Age Groups: Players born in 2017 & 2018

    U10 Age Groups: Players born in 2015 & 2016

    U12 Age Groups: Players born in 2014 & 2013

    U15 Age Groups: Players born in 2012, 2011 & 2010

    U18 Age Groups: Players born in 2009, 2008, 2007 & 2006.

  • Equipment & Uniforms

    SVU RECREATION JERSEY KIT – 

    Link for ordering Rec jerseys will be available soon.
    This jerseys will be an additional $24.00 fee. SVU will continue with our 2 Jersey system for games in Fall 2024 – Spring 2025 seasons. If you player played for SVU recreation in any season of 2023 or Spring 2024 you will NOT need to purchase new uniforms.

  • Financial Aid

    The purpose of the SVU Financial Aid program is to provide financial support for families with the greatest need so that they may participate in SVU programs without financial hardship. Financial aid is available in the fall and spring for qualifying families in the Recreation, Challenge and Travel programs based on demonstrated need and SVU’s ability to fund the assistance.

    Financial Aid Application and Approval

    All families requesting financial aid must complete a Financial Aid Form. All financial aid requests will be reviewed by staff and will be kept confidential. Applicants for financial aid MUST APPLY EACH TAX YEAR (April 15-April 15), with complete and current Information. The level of aid for which an applicant qualifies can be requested for programs throughout the year.  However, each financial aid request must be approved for each program.  Each financial aid request is subject to available funds. Any financial aid awards given will apply only to the current program registration.

    Completed Financial Aid Forms may be emailed to the SVU Support Team SVUinfo@shenvalleysoccer.com, mailed or dropped off at the SVU Office (SVU Soccer:  735 East Market Street, Unit C Harrisonburg, VA 22801)

    Financial Aid Coverage

    Financial aid is applied to registration fees only. It does not apply to uniform or other equipment expenses or any additional tournament fees or expenses.

    The amount of financial aid provided may vary by family. The amount is determined based on participation in public assistance programs (Medicaid, Free/Reduced Lunch Program, etc.), or by documenting income within established limits, as well as the total amount of aid offered to all other participants during the season.

    The aid approved on that form will only apply to the current program you applied for. Any aid requested for additional programs (camps, clinics, additional training, etc.) will need to be submitted in writing. Submitting a new application is not necessary within the same tax year.  Not all programs are eligible for financial aid.

    Head Coach (Recreation)
    The recreation head coach is responsible for managing team practices and games. The coach is expected to follow and implement the curriculum for the specific age group assigned. The Head Coach can expect to volunteer 2-3 hours per week from September through October and April through May. Practices are held one night per week in your home area with a game at Monger Fields on Saturdays. The coach is required to pass a background check, complete the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) Safe Sport Training and participate in pre-season coach training.

    Assistant Coach (Recreation)
    The recreation assistant coach is responsible for assisting the head coach in running team practices and games. The assistant coach is expected to follow and implement the curriculum for the specific age group assigned. If needed the Assistant Coach may act as the head coach for a team. The assistant coach can expect to volunteer 2-3 hours per week from September through October and April through May. Practices are held one night per week in your home area with a game at Monger Fields on Saturdays.

    The assistant coach is required to pass a background check, complete the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) Safe Sport Training and strongly encouraged to participate in pre-season coach training.
